Automotive Design Exterior Analogy Workshop

Workshop: Automotive Design Exterior Analogy
Facilitator: Hesam Fakhimi Jafarzadeh

Description:
A workshop & a study was carried out on Friday/16.12.2022, in Middle East Technical University Industrial Design department. The workshop was recommended for the ones with basic perspective skills, and the focus of the workshop was “How do we generally analyze and inspire from animals to design automobiles?”

Program:
First, a presentation was presented about different car segments and car anatomy. The general car proportions with different segments were also shown, but the students were told not to limit themselves by the proportions given. They were said to be highly free about design in the exercises, the proportions being not always exact, and see them as quick guidelines to practice car sketching.
Second, two A4 papers with exercises were randomly spread to each student, and they were asked to start sketching. Each paper had four car exercises (A total of 8) from side views. A total of 9 car segments were included, and each car segment paper had two dedicated animals to be inspired. Animals were selected and given according to the car segment.
Third, a short break was given, then they were presented with the fundamentals of perspective car sketching.
Lastly, single A3 papers were spread to each student, and they were told to select two favorite cars from the previous exercise (One from each paper). They were ought to combine and design their favorite car segment and type from the side, front, rear, and three different perspectives.

Conclusion:
A Total of 18 animals were included in the exercises. The way students were inspired was interesting in terms of Automotive design. The inspired form of cars was studied, and which forms were integrated into which parts of the car were of great importance. Most of the students who attended were from the Industrial design department; however, students from different departments were influential, and their perspectives were also very important.

Many thanks to METU Design Community for helping me to holding this workshop to students.
Last but not least, special thanks to my dear friend and brother Seymur Mamedov for the photography!
